✦ Yaxha, Guatemala
It´s quite easy to explore Yaxha with a tour from Flores, but mainly for money reasons we wanted to get there on our own: A casual decision with an unforeseen impact. First a terribly slow „collectivo“ took us to the closest crossroad 13 kilometers from the gates of the Mayan city. Our plan was to hitchhike from there, but we ended up walking all the way in the midday heat and almost got attacked by a pack of dogs. After 2.5 hours we arrived at the gate, completely exhausted and dehydrated – not the perfect conditions to start exploring an extensive ruin complex in the jungle. But despite the hassle to get there, Yaxha was one of the most beautiful and underrated Mayan cities we’ve seen. Tropical birds created the perfect soundtrack for our little jungle adventure and we even found ourselves completely alone with a big family of howler monkeys. Later an employee of the park was so nice to give us a ride back for a little tip and we ended the day watching an amazing sunset from the loading area of his truck while rushing through narrow, bumpy roads.
✦ Volcán de Fuego, Guatemala
There’s nothing more rewarding than a stunning view at the end of a tough hike. After 8 hours of walking uphill and an elevation gain of 1600 meters volcano Fuego welcomed us with roaring thunder and clouds of ashes. Of all the countless days we spent trekking between the mountains of Guatemala this unique experience will always be our favourite.
✦ Volcano Tajumulco, Guatemala
„Returning home is the most difficult part of long-distance hiking. You’ve grown outside the puzzle and your piece no longer fits.
