✦ Mo´noq, Uzbekistan
Aral Sea in Uzbekistan was once one of the largest lakes in Central Asia, but drainage of inflowing streams for cotton cultivation made 90% of the lake disappear since the 1960ies. That´s why you can find abandoned fishing villages lying 80 kilometers away from today´s shore – Mo´ynoq being one of them. To get there we did something unusual and rented a private guide for one day, because lacking information and complicated bureaucratic hurdles for renting a car left us no other choice. Climbing around rusty shipwrecks in the middle of the desert all by ourselves was so much fun, but although this might be a cool location the story behind it´s pictures is quite terrifiying.

✦ Registan, Uzbekistan
The most majestic buildings of the ancient Silk Road can be found in the city of Samarkand in Uzbekistan. With spectacular gates, minarets, domes and courtyards beautifully decorated with tiles colored in all different kinds of blue these architectural gems unite impressive size with amazing detail. Lucky as we are, that day Samarkand was celebrating some kind of anniversary so we weren’t charged any entrance fee. Additionally a nice local showed us a way to climb up to the second floor, where we could enjoy the view over the patio without any other tourists.
